What W020 Means

Error W020 on Shimano STEPS systems indicates the battery has detected internal temperatures outside its safe operating range — either too hot or too cold. Shimano lithium batteries have a defined operating window for both discharge (riding) and charging. Outside this window the BMS reduces or cuts output to protect the cells from permanent damage.

Cold Side — Below 0°C

Cold temperatures reduce lithium cell discharge capability dramatically. A battery showing 50 percent charge at room temperature may only deliver half its rated current at minus 5 degrees C. W020 in cold conditions signals the BMS is limiting output to protect against cell stress from over-discharge at low voltage.

Fix for Cold Conditions

Store the battery indoors overnight in cold weather and install it on the bike immediately before riding. A battery at 20 degrees C will warm slightly during the first few kilometres of riding. If W020 clears after 5 to 10 minutes of gentle riding, cold temperature was the cause. For very cold conditions (below minus 5 degrees C), an insulated battery cover helps maintain temperature.

Hot Side — Above 40°C

W020 from heat is most common when the bike has been left in direct sunlight with the battery installed. Lithium cells exposed to ambient temperatures above 40 degrees C can reach unsafe internal temperatures rapidly when installed in a dark-coloured battery enclosure on a sunny day.

Fix for Hot Conditions

Remove the battery from the bike, move it to a cool shaded location, and allow it to cool for 20 to 30 minutes before retesting. Never store the bike with the battery in direct sunlight for extended periods.
