Smart System vs System2

Bosch introduced the Smart System in 2022 as a complete redesign of the eBike electronics architecture. Smart System bikes use an encrypted CAN bus protocol, Bluetooth connectivity built into the motor, and over-the-air firmware updates via the eBike Flow smartphone app. The error code set is substantially different from the older System2 platform used on 2014 to 2021 bikes.

How to identify your system: Smart System displays include Kiox 300, Kiox 500, Purion 200, Purion 400, and Intuvia 100. System2 includes the original Kiox, Nyon, and Intuvia. Smart System motors have a Bluetooth symbol on the housing.

Using the eBike Flow App for Diagnosis

The eBike Flow app (iOS and Android) is the primary diagnostic tool for Smart System bikes and is available to all riders. Connect to your bike via Bluetooth and navigate to the System section. The app displays active error codes with plain-language descriptions, shows which component raised the error, and provides step-by-step resolution guidance. It also shows firmware update availability for all components — keeping firmware current is the most effective measure for preventing Smart System errors.

Most Common Smart System Error Categories

Communication Errors (4xx)

Smart System communication errors are more likely to be firmware-related than hardware-related compared to System2, because the encrypted CAN protocol is more sensitive to version mismatches. When any 4xx error appears, apply all available OTA firmware updates via eBike Flow before pursuing hardware diagnosis.

Motor Thermal Errors (5xx)

The Smart System Performance Line CX Gen5 (2023+) has improved thermal management. However, error 540 remains common on demanding rides. The Smart System motor temperature is visible in real time through the eBike Flow app, letting you monitor thermal margin and back off assist before the error triggers.

Battery Authentication (Error 530)

Smart System uses an updated battery authentication protocol. If error 530 appears after a motor replacement or firmware update, ensure battery firmware is current — eBike Flow updates battery and motor firmware simultaneously.

What You Can Fix vs What Needs a Dealer

Smart System gives riders significantly more self-service capability through eBike Flow. You can check active errors, read error history, apply firmware updates for all components, and check live sensor data without visiting a dealer. Hardware faults still require dealer service, but the app diagnostics often identify the faulty component precisely, making dealer visits faster and more targeted.
