What Error 440 Means
Error 440 is raised when the motor controller detects an anomaly that does not map to a more specific error number — including internal sensor drift, power stage irregularities, and firmware assertion failures. External inspection alone cannot identify the root cause; the Bosch DiagnosticsTool 3 is required to read the sub-error stored in the controller fault log.
What You Can Check Yourself
Power Cycle Test
Remove the battery completely. Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds to fully discharge the controller capacitors. Reinstall the battery and power on.
Firmware Update Check
On Smart System platforms, open the eBike Flow app and check for pending motor firmware updates. Known bugs producing spurious error 440 have been patched across several firmware versions.
Connector Inspection
Inspect all external motor connectors — display cable, speed sensor, and battery contacts. A marginal connector failing data integrity can produce error 440.
When Dealer Diagnosis is Required
If error 440 persists after power cycle and firmware update, a Bosch dealer must connect the DiagnosticsTool 3 to read the sub-error code. Most sub-errors require drive unit replacement.
